Helpful Fall Home Maintenance Tips

Fall home maintenance tips are important for any home owner. With fall is in full swing, it’s a good idea to go through the following home maintenance tips and checklist to make sure you’re all set for winter –

1) Adjust Humidity Settings

During the winter, humidity levels should be lowered to 20% (each home is different – adjust accordingly). If ice or excess condensation appears on windows, reduce humidity even more.

2) Check Furnace & Ventilation System Filters

A dirty or plugged air filter can limit air flow from the furnace to the ducts. Inspect and clean/replace the filters at the beginning of the heating season and on a regular basis in the winter. This home maintenance tip is extremely important!

3) Water Trees & Shrubs

Trees and shrubs should be watered thoroughly in the early fall to ensure there is adequate moisture at the root during the winter. You work hard to keep your outdoor space looking beautiful so this home maintenance tip will ensure it remains that way.

4) Inspect Floor Drains

Floor drains are usually located next to the furnace. To prevent sewer gas from entering your home, ensure water is always present in the drains. A secure water seal is important. I can’t stress this enough!

5) Inspect Eavestroughs & Downspouts

Efficient rooftop drainage will help keep your basement dry by moving water away from your home. Surface particles often settle in the eavestroughs, reducing their efficiency. Clean out eavestroughs yearly to help to prevent this. It’s a home maintenance tip that will help prevent flooding, damage to your foundation and more.

6) Check Adjustable Steel Posts in the Basement

Adjustable posts are used to support main beams in the basement and transfer loads to the foundation. Homeowners should regularly check that the supporting post is supporting the beam, as uneven pressure can cause issues.

7) Check & Test Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Detector Batteries

Make sure you read the owner’s manual for your CO & smoke detectors. Experts recommend having both battery-powered & wired-in models for an added level of protection. This may seem like alot but fire prevention is a home maintenance tip you can’t neglect.

8) Clean Range Hood Filters

Kitchen range hoods are an important part of your home’s ventilation system to remove odours and improve air quality. Clean and replace filters in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
