New REALTOR® 2022 | Serena Holmes

New REALTOR® 2022. Has a nice ring to it if you ask me!

There are tens of thousands of REALTOR®’s here in Ontario, with more and more becoming licensed every day. This said, just because there are a lot of them doesn’t mean that all of them are active. Some people choose to get their real estate license for personal reasons like helping friends/family or for investment rather than making a career out of it.  Of those that do attempt to make a career out of it, some will succeed while others may fail.

As a new REALTOR® 2022, the process of becoming established, when there is so much competition, can be a daunting task but it’s something that must be done. An important thing to keep in mind is perspective.

It only takes one.

One colleague to give you some guidance and support.

One potential buyer or seller to start working with.

One person who will make a difference.

That’s what it’s all about isn’t it?

In the business of real estate, it’s up to us REALTOR®’s to help our clients achieve their goals. Maybe they’re buying their first home, maybe they’re downsizing, maybe they’re leaving to take a job on the other side of the world. Whatever your clients goal is, it will become your goal too.

As a new REALTOR® 2022, here are some of the things I’ve learned so far.

TRAINING: Take advantage of as much training as you can. Every brokerage is different, but no matter how stellar the brokerage, there may still be some things you need to figure out on your own. Explore your real estate board’s site and watch their instructional videos, ask lots of questions and find a great circle of experienced REALTOR®’s who can help support you.

NETWORK: Meet as many people as you can! This is NOT as easy as it used to be. Due to COVID, there are a lot of restrictions in place – and some people aren’t comfortable getting together, especially with people they don’t know yet. I’ve been fortunate to meet a few other REALTOR®’s in my brokerage who were not only open to connecting but have been super generous with their time to show me some of the things I couldn’t figure out on my own.

HELP: Yes, it’s as simple as that – offer your time to help! You can’t expect to be a “master” when you’re just starting out. You have to humbly approach every situation as a learning opportunity. If that means extending your time to offer some favours, it will be well worth it. A REALTOR® reached out to the brokerage a little while ago asking if anyone could take his buyers to a showing since he’d be away. I jumped at the opportunity. Now he is sending me potential leads and even asked me to join in to listen to negotiations following an offer presentation. What a phenomenal opportunity to learn!

INFORM: Let people know what you’re up to. If you’re a new REALTOR® 2022, it make take some time for people to adjust to the idea that you’re pursuing something new, especially if you’re well known in another field. That’s ok! There is no limitation on when you can start over. For me, I am starting over at 40 – but I bring with me years of experience investing in real estate and running my own nationwide event services agency.

HONESTY: Be transparent and always be honest. Not all buyers and sellers will be open to the idea of a new REALTOR® representing them but it’s paramount to the code of ethics. Make sure they are aware that you’re new to the game while also stressing all of the strengths you bring with you. I was talking to a woman the other day who reached out about selling her rental property. She asked to see my other listings and I had to tell her, I had none (yet!). Although she felt there could be some con’s to working with a new REALTOR®, she also said she knew I’d take great care of her because I’m not trying to juggle a ton of clients at once.

It’s all about perspective!
